There are other methods of phase control on the market today besides phase converters to handle power issues of equipment.  To mention a few of the other methods of phase control are transformers, inverters and generators.

Transformers basically convert three phase voltages from one voltage to another, they do not however, change power phase levels. This other method of power phase device transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled wires. When there is a change of current in the first circuit, it creates a magnetic field.  This magnetic field will then cause a change in voltage to the second current. When you add a load to the second circuit, currents will flow in the transformer creating energy to transfer from one circuit to the other circuit.  In this other method of power phase, sometimes a need for three phase supply is needed.  When this happens, you can have a bank of three individual single phase transformers. You can also incorporate all three phases as a single phase transformer. At this point, the magnetic circuits are connected together, and the core will contain a three phase flow of power. Transformers come in all different sizes and there are several different types available. There are step-up transformers, step-down transformer, isolation transformers and variable auto-transformers.

One of the other methods of phase control is the inverter. A phase inverter is also known as a variable frequency drive. What the inverter does is change the speed of your electric motors. They were designed to run three phase power equipment on a single phase power source as other methods of phase control. The inverter can only power one piece of equipment at a time unlike the rotary phase converters. The phase inverter is very sensitive and the operating lifespan of an inverter is limited compared to the phase converter. The phase inverter basically will jump start your equipment with three phase power but then runs full throttle on only single phase power.  This can create damage to your equipment if used as other methods of phase control.

Then we have the generator as one of the other methods of phase control. The generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Sometimes a generator is used if utility power is lost for a period of time or if you need to power a piece of large equipment. They can generate wattage up to 1000 MW or more. This other method of phase control utilizes a magnetic field to produce an output of voltage, thus driving the current to the load that needs to be powered. Generators can be powered by gasoline engines or diesel engines. Generators are used a lot on construction sites and remote areas as other methods of phase control.

Most of these other methods of phase control tend to be rather costly. Due to their versatility, the phase converter seems to be the best source of producing power the most economical way.
