Phase controllers are devices used to change single phase power into three phase power since most large industry equipment is geared to generate off of three phase power.  

There are many different applications that need phase controllers to run properly such as air compressors, air conditioners, belt sanders, chain saws, grain augers, irrigation pumps, etc. To determine what phase controller your three phase equipment needs, is to recognize what type three phase load you have, such as a inductive, resistive, cnc, or a motor type load. 

Here are a few of the different types of phase controllers on the market today:

Transformers - They cannot obtain three phase power from a single phase power source. They can be used to change the power source if the power source is greater than single phase power to begin with.

Variable Frequency Drives and Inverters - They are designed to use on one motor at a time and they control the speed of electric motors. They can never be used with a mixed load.

Frequency Converters - They are electronic devices which convert alternating current of one frequency to alternating current of another frequency. They are used mostly overseas.

Voltage Converters - A compact device that steps down the voltage which is found in most other countries to the USA 110 volts.

Static Phase Converters - They basically only jump start your equipment to run on three phase power. Once the relay kicks in, the capacitor puts your equipment back to running on single phase power.

Rotary Phase Converters - They will convert your single phase power into three phase power. They are designed to be used on larger industrial equipment. Most widely used phase controllers on the market today.
