Phase motor control is when a device of some sort is used to govern the performance of an electric motor. The device is usually geared to control starting and stopping, selecting forward or reverse and regulating the speed of the motor. This device should also protect the motor from overloads and faults.

A variable frequency drive (VFD's) is one of the devices used in phase motor control. Phase motor control & VFD's have become one of the most widely used ways of controlling your motors. A VFD is an adjustable speed drive that will balance the speed of an alternating current (AC) motor and the frequency of the AC power supply. 

In learning about phase motor control and VFD's, you learn that when a VFD starts a motor, it will first apply a low frequency and voltage to the motor. When the motor starts at such a low frequency, it avoids the high inrush current that can occur when a motor is started. Once the VFD starts, the applied frequency and voltage are increased at a controlled rate to accelerate without the load drawing too much current.

Applications used in phase motor control & VFD's are usually equipment that requires speed control such as boiler fans, large pumps and conveyors. Variable frequency drives were developed due to the modern day advances in solid state electronic technology.  Variable frequency drives are much like the inverters. They were designed to a run three phase on single phase power, however phase motor control and VFD's don't always work the way you would expect.  They can't power any more than one three phase load at a time and you really aren't getting the true three phase power that you actually need to run your equipment.  The VFD is one of the least expensive phase motor controls, but in the long run, phase motor control & VFD's can be very costly.
